Have your say on EU financial rules

October 2009

As part of its second revision of the financial rules for EU-funded programmes, the European Commission today launched a public consultation inviting beneficiaries and managers of public funds to send in their views on how to make the rules for grants and contracts more effective for everyone. The open consultation is an opportunity for all interested parties to share their practical experience so the Commission can, among other things, improve access to grants and simplify its own handling of financial files. This is especially important as the EU begins to prepare the ground for a new generation of programmes in 2014.

Closure of Architecture Museum of Ljubljana (AML) in Ljubljana, Slovenia and Reorganisation of State Authority on Museums in Latvia

October 2009

Recently NEMO was informed about two alarming developments in the museum landscape of Latvia and Slovenia, which we would like to forward to your attention:

Latvia:

The State Authority on Museums in Latvia, which is responsible for the professional museum work in Latvia, will be re-organized with the beginning of the next year. Re-organization means in this case that the institution will be closed, and only few functions and few people will be incorporated in the Latvian Ministry of Culture. There are considerable doubts that the same results and the same quality of activities of the Latvian museums system will be ensured after the planned changes. Neither the State Authority on Museums nor museum professionals have been involved in planning the new structure of this museum system, which is probably the most alarming.

Slovenia:

After 37 years the Municipality of Ljubljana will dissolve the Architectural Museum of Ljubljana on 19th October 2009. The activities of AML will be merged with those of the International Centre of Graphic Arts (MGLC). This has no beneficial basis as the domain of graphic and visual arts is quite different from that of architecture and design and will blur the activities in the domain of design and architecture. There will be a reduction in the number of exhibitions, subsidies, sponsors, and staff of both institutions. There will also be a further threat to merge the two now separate biennials that the two institutions currently run (the Biennial of Industrial Design and the Biennial of Graphic Arts) into a single event, although the contents are incompatible and will consecutively ruin both events.

NEMO has published two letters of concern directed to the Ministry of Culture in Latvia and to the Municipality of Ljubljana, Slovenia, in order to raise its concerns over these developments and to stop the merger of the Architectural Museum of Ljubljana and International Centre of Graphic Arts on the one hand and on the other to keep the Latvian State Authority on Museums alive.

For further information read NEMO's letters of Concern to the Latvian Ministry of Culture and to the Municipality of Ljubljana, Slovenia...

NEWS! +++ The Ministry of Culture in Slovenia decided on 19 October 2009 that the Architectural Museum will become a state institution in the future and therewith ensured the museum's continuity. Read museum director's statement +++
