Launched in 2018, the initiative NEMO Political Internships in Museums aims to give politicians, as well as civil servants, a greater understanding of museum work. The objective is to foster museum advocacy and to showcase museums’ social importance to politicians and other stakeholders.
Julie Ward and her staff will be the first ever interns to take part of NEMO’s scheme of Political Internships. At the end of the day, they will have gotten an overall understanding of the everyday life of a museum professional. They will start the half-day internship with exploring the exhibitions together with artistic director Stijn Huijts. Later they will meet the visitors when minding the ticket and museum shop as well as the information desk. The interns get a behind the scenes insight when they get a tour through the Bonnefanten depot, visit the wood workshop as well as when preparing a condition report for an artwork. The group will also get to visit the Stichting Restauratie Atelier Limburg. A talk with members of the YOUNG OFFICE, announcing the closing announcement and lastly help the security staff clear the museum will mark the end of the internship.
NEMO hopes that the initiative NEMO Political Internships in Museums will contribute to showcasing the importance of museums and the great skills found within every part of a museum.
