This year's World Heritage Day - celebrating international monuments and sites - is under the theme of sustainable tourism.

There are over 400 heritage sites in Europe of the over 1000 worldwide. Worldwide, 55 heritage sites are currently in danger.

The World Heritage Day aims to raise awareness of the importance of protecting and preserving heritage sites around the world. During the day many activities inform about the sites, their vulnerability and what goes into conserving and protecting them.

This year's focus on Sustainable Tourism correlates with the United Nations International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development and is in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals.
