The museum law of the Republic of Austria is regulating primarily the duties and responsibilities of the National Museums (Bundesmuseen).
The nine federal states of Austria have different legal structures regulating the cultural policy.
There is no legal protection of the word and/or the institution "Museum" in Austria.
Most of the registered museums are state owned; either by the (federal) state or by the city. There are also a lot of private museums (mostly run by associations, few also by companies) and some museums are run by churches.
There is no public loan policy or insurance policy. The state owned museums, the so called Bundesmuseen, can benefit from the state indemnity scheme.
