Information about the Museums Organisation
There is no overarching Museum Association in Italy
Istituto Beni Artistici, Culturali e Naturali della Regione Emilia Romagna (IBACN), which is a regional public body, part of the Regional government of Emilia Romagna.
IBACN was founded in 1974
Main funding of IBACN comes from the Regional Government of Emilia Romagna. Special or European projects provide additional funding.
Have the museums/your institution experienced budget cuts in connection with the financial crisis in the last two years?
Financial legislation for 2011 has established ceilings for public spending for public institutions in the cultural/museum field, so that:
for the organization of exhibitions the public institution can spend only 20% of what has spent in 2009
there is a cut of 80% of overall resources in real terms.
This doesn't take into consideration whether funds for exhibitions come from private sources. In other terms, museums will not be able to spend on exhibitions, even if they have the resources.
How do museums cope with the budget cuts?
In 2010 museums have shortened opening times, so they close earlier or remain closed on certain days. Outsourcing has been reduced and in some cases this refers also to the buying out of certain services, like educational activities. Personnel in general has not been downsized, as most of Italian museums are public organizations and staff are civil servants.
In 2011 one should expect a drastic reduction of the number of exhibitions, publications and conferences.
Number of museums in your country:
Art and Design: 29,8%
