Information about the Museums Organisation
The Irish Museums Association is a 32-county voluntary body, founded in 1977 to service the needs of the Irish museums community. The Association aspires to encourage the improvement of museums and galleries and museum practice, so that those working in and visiting museums will enjoy the maximum cultural, social and educational benefits. It also endeavours to enhance the value of museums to the community through leadership, advocacy and service.

Little change has occurred in the profile of the administrative authorities governing the museums surveyed between 1994 and 2005. Perhaps the most obvious change is the increase in the number of institutions which categorize themselves as other, which has reduced by 18.2%.

The IMA publishes two newsletters annually alongside a journal entitled Museum Ireland. The annual journal Museum Ireland is the leading journal for people working in Irish museums, galleries, libraries, archives, historic houses and other cultural heritage venues. It contains a variety of articles, case studies and reviews on topical issues facing the profession by national and international museum experts and professionals.
National Museum legislation and structure:
The Cultural Institutions Act of 1997 is the legislatives act which governs the National Museum of Ireland.
