In a summary of the activity report, Culture Action Europe shares that the Committee led efforts to advocate for decent working conditions in the cultural sector (rapporteur Domènec Ruiz Devesa, S&D) and ensured the proper legal basis for the 2021-2027 Creative Europe Programme (Massimiliano Smeriglio, S&D) and the European Capitals of Culture (Željana Zovko, EPP).
Additionally, the committee produced own-initiative reports urging the European Commission to take action on the New European Bauhaus (co-rapporteur Marcos Ros Sempere, S&D), conditions for authors in the European music streaming market, and transparent recommendation algorithms on streaming platforms (García del Blanco, S&D). They also addressed the future of the European book sector (Tomasz Frankowski, EPP). Another report focused on the situation of artists during the pandemic and cultural recovery in the EU (Monica Semedo, Renew), calling on member states to allocate 2% of their Recovery and Resilience Facility funds to culture—a call supported by NEMO in the Cultural Deal for Europe campaign.
Throughout this mandate, several important files for the cultural sphere were led by socialist rapporteurs. Among the current 29 members of the CULT Committee, at least 17 are reportedly seeking re-election, including almost all of the Committee’s leadership.
