On Earth Day 22 April 2022, the Network of European Museum Organisations (NEMO) is launching a survey to evaluate the status quo of European museums’ transition and journey towards sustainability in a time of climate emergency. With your input, NEMO will develop recommendations for policy makers and help steer the sector towards a sustainable future. The survey is open until 22 June 2022.

Climate change is transforming the world drastically and every person and sector, including museums, is affected. We need to take action now to mitigate the damaging effects of climate change, lower carbon emissions and transition to sustainable solutions. To help museums take on this task, NEMO is asking the museum community in Europe to participate in a survey that will reflect the status quo of where museums stand in their transition to climate friendly and sustainable operations. The results will serve as a basis for policy recommendations coming from the sector to pro-actively shape climate policy for the sector.

Access the survey via bit.ly/NEMOclimate

The survey seeks to investigate the role of climate change and sustainability in the following themes

  • Strategic Relevance
  • Infrastructure and Building
  • Funding
  • Risk Assessment, Adaptation and Agility
  • Expertise, Skills and Training
  • Work Methods and Guiding Principles
  • Public Actions
  • Networking and Advocacy

Museum professionals are invited to participate in the survey until 22 June 2022 (the deadline has been extended). Please allocate 15 minutes to answer the survey. The answers are anonymous. NEMO welcomes you to consult the glossary in case some concepts are unclear and suggest using Google Chrome as a browser if you wish to use the integrated Google Translate tool to read the questions in another language.

Please share the survey widely with museum colleagues across Europe. Each additional answer increases the accuracy of the data and the resulting recommendations that will be derived from the survey results. With your contribution, NEMO will be better equipped to help European museums transition and fully tap their potential as key players in fighting climate change and to contribute to a sustainable future.
