Over the past decades, museums have rapidly transformed, adjusted and reinvented themselves to the point where the current ICOM museum definition no longer reflects reality. Therefore ICOM invites people to submit their definitions until 20 May 2019.

ICOM members and other interested parties are welcome to submit their definition of the museum until 20 May 2019 via this form. A new definition will be decided upon at ICOM’s General Conference in Kyoto from 1-7 September 2019.

The current ICOM museum definition states:

“A museum is a non-profit, permanent institution in the service of society and its development, open to the public, which acquires, conserves, researches, communicates and exhibits the tangible and intangible heritage of humanity and its environment for the purposes of education, study and enjoyment.”

Submitted proposals will be published here as they are received.
