Benefits and Disadvantages of the new Copyright Directive for Museums

The user benefits and disadvantages of the new Copyright Directive's effects on nine different issue areas are analysed on the website Communia. Museums and other cultural heritage institutions are deemed to benefit from the new directive when it comes to serving their users online.

Legal certainty will be improved by a mandatory exception for preservation copies and articles 7-9a enables cultural heritage institutions to make copyrighted works from their collections, which are not in commerce, available online.

With the website Communia, the International Association on the Digital Public Domain hopes to demonstrate how the Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market will empower or disadvantage creators in the digital age. The site aims to showcase the importance of online open access to culture, creative expression and communication for the people.
