Germany takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union

On 1 July 2020, the Croatian Presidency handed over the torch to Germany, which will hold the Presidency of the Council of the EU until 31 December 2020. Within the framework of the presidency, NEMO is organising an online museum conference on social responsibility from 17-18 September.

The priorities of Germany's presidency are driven by its motto: "Together for Europe’s recovery".

The presidency programme focuses on six main areas:

  • overcoming the consequences of the coronavirus crisis for the long-term as well as economic and social recovery
  • a stronger and more innovative Europe
  • a fair Europe
  • a sustainable Europe
  • a Europe of security and common values
  • a strong Europe in the world

NEMO is co-organising the conference Museums and Social Responsibility: Values Revisited with the German Museums Association. It was supposed to take place in Karlsruhe, Germany, but has been moved online for everyone’s safety.

From 17-18 September, we will discuss what museums can do, what is needed, and what still is missing to make an impact on our European society. The conference will focus on what social responsibility means for museums. Through their daily work, museums make a significant contribution to social responsibility by dealing with questions that are connected to social cohesion, social inclusion and social diversity.

Registration to the conference is open via: https://hopin.to/events/valuesrevisited

Museums and Social Responsibility: Values Revisited is the first of three conferences and the following two will be held in Portugal and Slovenia, which are next to hold the Presidency of the EU.

Croatia’s Presidency of the Council of the EU might be over, but the Croatian city Rijeka is still a European Capital of Culture. NEMO has the pleasure of organising its 28thEuropean Museum Conference Museums - Making Sense in Rijeka from 15-18 November 2020.
