From 7-8 May 2019 NEMO is attending an international conference and expert meeting on intangible cultural heritage, museums and cultural policies in Mechelen, Belgium. The two day event is organised by IMP – the Intangible Cultural Heritage and Museums Project. NEMO is one of the project partners and will give a presentation at the Expert Meeting on 8 May.

The existing and future potential policies on the intersection between museums and (safeguarding) intangible cultural heritage (ICH) will be explored during the expert meeting. At the meeting, NEMO Secretary General Julia Pagel will give a talk on the future of ICH and museums. At the moment, European museums have surprisingly little experience with Intangible Cultural Heritage. Only step by step have they – within the last 15 years – embraced the topic and developed approaches and techniques how to introduce ICH in their everyday work, in all aspects of museum work such as the Acquisition, Conservation, Research, Communication, and Exhibition. In her presentation, Julia will explain how a European network such as NEMO can support museums all over Europe to engage with ICH.
