No cuts for Creative Europe in the next long-term EU budget

On 21 July 2020, the European Council adopted the recovery plan and multiannual financial framework for 2021-2027. The financial envelope for Creative Europe is brought back to the Commission's proposal of €1,64 billion from 2018. NEMO welcomes that no cuts were made but regrets to see that the final budget is lower compared to the proposal made by the European Parliament.

The EU summit meeting was the longest to date but after difficult negotiations, the Council found a compromise on the next 7-year budget. The Creative Europe budget of 1,64 billion Euro is better than the proposal made by the European Commission in May 2019, but far from the doubling that NEMO and many other European cultural organisations asked for by endorsing and participating in Culture Action Europe’s campaign “double for culture”.
