From Parliament to hands-on museum work

In just a few hours, the BELvue Museum in Brussels will welcome a new intern. Today 16 September, Nela Riehl, Member of the European Parliament and Chair of the Committee on Culture and Education, is taking part in a NEMO Political Internship in Museums. Riehl is eager to discover the hidden side of museum life: "I have only ever experienced museums as a visitor, so I’m very curious to discover the other side." Since 2018, our advocacy initiative has given EU policymakers hands-on insight into museum work - from caring for collections and designing exhibitions to civic education and selling tickets. The BELvue, known as a living forum for democracy and reflection, provides the perfect setting for Riehl’s internship. As NEMO Secretary General Julia Pagel explains: "Through this internship we want to show how museums are vital spaces for dialogue, reflection and resilience, especially in today’s challenging political, environmental and social climate."
