Impact of the Year

The European Year of Cultural Heritage (EYCH) 2018 put European heritage and culture on the map. 9 558 740 people attended 18 365 events across Europe. NEMO contributed to the EYCH 2018 and will continue working towards highlighting and celebrating European heritage and make sure that the legacy of the year lives on.

NEMO organised 17 events with about 1600 participants during the EYCH 2018 and awarded 33 events with the EYCH label. As a member of the stakeholder committee, NEMO was able to award events with the label and five of these projects were chosen to further present their projects in the European Project Slam of EYCH 2018 at NEMO’s Annual Conference in November 2018 in Valletta, Malta. The Project Slam encouraged people to apply for the label and to get involved with the year. All together, 12 834 events and projects were awarded the EYCH label by the different stakeholders.

NEMO was also part of creating one of 51 High Level events that were organised between 7 December 2017 - 31 December 2019. On 19 June 2018, during the European Heritage Summitt, NEMO invited the public to a dance at the event A Museum Night out - Dance at the Museum. 872 people danced for European heritage and culture at NEMO’s event and all in all 1 096 170 people participated in the High Level events organised across Europe.

The year also made an impact online. The hashtag #EuropeForCulture was used 146 000 times by 42 000 unique users. NEMO’s online contribution counts to 296 posts on Facebook and Twitter, which gained 325 856 impressions.

The year culminated with the European Framework for Action on Cultural Heritage that ensures the year’s legacy by developing further concrete actions. The Framework for Action promotes and puts into practice an integrated and participatory approach to cultural heritage, and contributes to the mainstreaming of cultural heritage across EU policies. NEMO’s trainings for museum professionals are mentioned as a successful example of how “Pillar 1: Participation and access for all” can be achieved.

Aims and Objectives of the European Year of Cultural Heritage

The 2018 European Year of Cultural Heritage (EYCH 2018) aimed to raise awareness of European history and values and to strengthen a sense of European identity. It encouraged more people to discover and explore the opportunities of Europe's rich and diverse cultural heritage. At the same time, it drew attention to the challenges cultural heritage faces, such as the impact of the digital shift, environmental and physical pressure on heritage sites, and the illicit trafficking of cultural objects.

The main objectives of this European Year were:

  • to promote cultural diversity, intercultural dialogue and social cohesion;
  • to highlight the economic contribution of cultural heritage to the cultural and creative sectors, including small and medium-sized enterprises, and to local and regional development
  • to emphasise the role of cultural heritage in European cultural diplomacy
  • to underline the importance of safeguarding our common cultural heritage

Implementation of the European Year of Cultural Heritage

The European Year had a dedicated financial envelope of 8 million Euro, which was partially financed through the Creative Europe Programme. As other European Years, EYCH 2018 was implemented through initiatives and events at European, national, regional and local levels. Initiatives at the different levels could be awarded the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 label (also through NEMO!).

At European level, the implementation of the Year was a joint effort of the European Commission, the European Parliament, the Council and also the Committee of the Regions and the European Economic and Social Committee.
Stakeholders of European cultural heritage organisations and networks were part of a stakeholder committee shaping the year and support cross-border initiatives, e.g. by awarding them with the EYCH label.
At country level, the Year was organised by national coordinators, designated by each EU Member State.

NEMO and the EYCH 2018

NEMO was actively involved in the European Year. The network was part of the European Commission's stakeholder committee for the year and developed different activities and formats together with its members. NEMO was in particular interested in supporting national museum organisations, museums and stakeholders in Europe during the year by providing opportunities for collaboration, exchange, networking and information. And by awarding the European Year of Cultural Heritage label.

European Project Slam of EYCH2018
Five projects that were submitted to NEMO before September 2018 and awarded with the EYCH 2018 label were chosen to present their activities at NEMO's Annual Conference from 15-18 November in Valletta, Malta.
