Martin Zierold

Dr Martin Zierold is the Director of the Institute for Arts and Media Management at Hamburg’s University of Theatre and Music. His areas of focus are strategy and organisational development of arts organisations in times of uncertainty and transformation. He also works freelance as a coach, trainer and consultant.

With a background in social sciences and a PhD on memory culture and digital media (2006), he has worked in various academic positions and arts management prior to taking on the chair in Hamburg. An overview of publications and further activities can be found online at www.martinzierold.de.  

At NEMO’s European Museum Conference 2022, Martin Zierold will join the session "Inside the museum of the future" on Monday 10 October. He will also deliver a presentation at the NEMO Directors' Meeting on 9 October.

“Leadership” seems to be an almost magical term in organisations: It is commonly diagnosed to be the cause of almost any problem – and at the same time, it is often seen as the core solution as well – just a different kind, or more or less of it. What could be a contemporary approach to Cultural Leadership which is aware of the paradoxes and conflicts entangled with the term – and how can leadership contribute to arts organisations which play an active role in our present societies on rapid transformation?
