Vojko Obersnel

Vojko Obersnel, Mayor of the City of Rijeka, Croatia, was born on March 25th, 1957 in Rijeka. He graduated in 1980 from the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb, completing a postgraduate study of natural sciences at the Faculty of Science in Zagreb, gaining a Master's degree in natural sciences, and then a postgraduate study of medical genetics at the Faculty of Medicine in Zagreb. Obersnel has been a member of the Social Democratic party since 1990, including membership in the Parliamentary Committee for Local and Regional Self-Government for several terms. He became the Mayor of the City of Rijeka on March 2, 2000.  Obersnel has been elected Mayor of Rijeka for five terms in a row, in 2001, 2005, 2009, 2013 and 2017. In 2017, he regained the trust of the citizens of Rijeka and is currently holding his sixth term as Mayor of Rijeka.

Obersnel's current term is marked by an extremely successful withdrawal of funds from the European Union for financing large development projects in Rijeka, but also for a number of smaller projects. All of Obersnel’s terms are marked by a strong social agenda that has evolved and expanded over the years. Today, Rijeka is recording positive results in all areas, both in the economic indicators of the activities of the economic and entrepreneurial sector, as well as in tourism, the development of the University, and professional, scientific and service activities. It has become a successful, modern European city whose openness is the best guarantee of future development.

In the past 17 years, Obersnel has been actively involved in a number of organizations and associations dealing with the development of local self-government, decentralization and positioning cities as the drivers of development for entire regions. Also, Mayor Obersnel is one of the Vice-Chairs of the EU Committee of the Regions and a member of the Committee on the Environment, Climate Change and Energy and the Committee on Territorial Cohesion Policy and the EU Budget.

At NEMO’s European Museum Conference 2020, Vojko Obersnel will on 16 November welcome the participants to the conference.
