Museums across the world will organise events, exhibitions and education programmes under the theme “Museums for Education and Research”. Together they will be part of underscoring the significance of museums as dynamic educational institutions fostering learning, discovery, and cultural understanding. ICOM hopes that the day will prompt people to rethink education and imagine a future where knowledge sharing transcends barriers, where innovation unites with tradition.

In 2024, the International Museum Day will highlight the following two Sustainable Development Goals:
- Goal 4: Quality Education – Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all
- Goal 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure – Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation.
