Hannu-Pekka Polttila

Hannu-Pekka Polttila is Head of Department at the Finnish Heritage Agency, where he is responsible for digitalisation, national photographic collections, archaeological collections and state archaeological field investigations, as well as library and information services. With over 20 years of experience in public sector digitalisation and information management, he has worked extensively on developing digital services, information governance, and organisational capabilities. 

His work brings together cultural heritage, digital transformation, cybersecurity and the emerging opportunities of artificial intelligence. In addition to addressing digital risks, he is particularly interested in how museums and heritage organisations can harness technology to improve access, create new opportunities, safeguard cultural heritage and strengthen resilience in an increasingly complex world.

At NEMO’s European Museum Conference 2026, Hannu-Pekka Polttila will join the panel “Under attack: Cybersecurity, trust and resilience in museums” on Monday, 12 October.

Reassessing risk: Museums, cybersecurity, and the shift from physical to digital threats

Museums have long invested in protecting collections from fire, theft, and environmental damage. But what happens when the greatest risks are no longer physical? Using practical "what-if" scenarios, Hannu-Pekka Pölttilä explores how cyberattacks can affect collections, research, operations, and public trust. His contribution invites museums to rethink risk, resilience, and preparedness in an increasingly digital environment, and to consider whether current priorities and investments reflect the realities of today's threat landscape.
