Museums have a unique role to play in supporting learning, creativity, wellbeing and social inclusion. This consultation presents an important opportunity to ensure that the value of museums and other informal learning environments is reflected in future European education policies.
The European Commission is seeking evidence, knowledge, research and examples of good practice across three key areas:
- Basic skills: Helping schools address declining performance in literacy, mathematics, science, digital skills and citizenship.
- Teachers and trainers: Improving working conditions, career development and the attractiveness of the teaching profession.
- Digital education infrastructure: Modernising education systems as AI becomes increasingly central to learning, while ensuring inclusiveness and human-centred approaches.
Relevant consultation pathways
While the Education Package consists of three consultation strands, Culture Action Europe has identified two particularly relevant entry points for the cultural sector:
- School education: strengthening basic skills and improving performance
This initiative focuses on improving educational outcomes and supporting the development of core competencies among learners.

Why should museums participate?
Museums can offer valuable perspectives on the future of education and NEMO encourages museums to draw on their own programmes, research, partnerships and visitor experiences, particularly in areas such as:
- The importance of arts and cultural education within and beyond the classroom.
- The educational value of visits to museums and other informal learning spaces.
- Fostering creativity, critical thinking and other skills that are increasingly important in the age of AI.
- Supporting children's and young people's wellbeing through engagement with culture.
- Encouraging healthy habits by providing meaningful alternatives to sedentary lifestyles and excessive screen time.
- Strengthening social bonds and community cohesion through shared cultural experiences.
NEMO encourages museums, museum professionals and museum networks across Europe to take part in the consultation and share evidence of how museums contribute to education, creativity, wellbeing and social development. The more voices from the museum sector are heard, the better the opportunity to ensure that museums are recognised as essential partners in Europe's educational future.
