NEMO endorses call for strong EU leadership on culture

NEMO endorses a proposed mission letter to the next European Commissioner responsible for culture. The letter, published by Culture Action Europe, Europa Nostra and the European Cultural Foundation, outlines the primary priorities and principles for the portfolio.

The Cultural Deal for Europe partners invite the President of the European Commission to take inspiration from the proposed letter when preparing the mission letter that will be sent to the next European Commissioner responsible for Culture, outlining the main priorities and principles of their portfolio.

Culture Action Europe (CAE) highlights the proposed mission letter again ahead of the upcoming parliamentary hearings and appointment of European Commissioners. CAE is urging EU leaders to support a committed, pro-European Commissioner for Culture who champions artistic freedom, cultural democracy, civil society engagement, and international cooperation.

NEMO stands behind this call and the letter proposal, which includes establishing a strategic framework for Europe’s cultural policy that addresses precarious working conditions for artists, ensures EU funding, protects artists' rights in the face of AI advancements, and safeguards artistic freedom. CAE also expresses concern about growing threats to artistic freedom and the misuse of culture for spreading anti-democratic narratives in Europe.

NEMO will continue the conversation about artistic freedom, cultural democracy, civil society engagement, and international cooperation at the NEMO European Museum Conference “Can we talk? Museums facing polarisation”, taking place from 10-12 November 2024 in Sibiu, Romania. Join to be part of important conversations and discussions with European museum colleagues on the role museums (can) play in today’s challenged democracies.
