NEMO joined Italian conference analysing museum impact assessment and methods

Upon invitation by ICOM Italy, NEMO joined a conference on 3 December 2022 in Rome, Italy, to discuss impact assessment and social reporting of museum activities from a national and international perspective.

The conference was organised on the occasion of the National Assembly of Members, which from 2-3 December 2022 attracted a large number of museum directors and professionals to Rome. Margherita Sani represented NEMO at the conference.

About the conference, ICOM Italy writes that considering the widening of the museum's functions and social role, increasingly oriented towards the objectives of accessibility, inclusion, sustainability, as reiterated in the new ICOM definition, and therefore of the research and experimentation of effective tools and approaches to guarantee equity, justice, wellbeing and the active participation of people and communities, it becomes important to identify quantitative and qualitative measurement methods to assess the concrete results of services, activities, projects aimed at the public, communities, and territories.

In the first part of the conference, general aspects outlining the objectives, criteria and tools for evaluating cultural, economic and social impact were addressed, while also examining the methodological and organisational problems associated with the identification of indicators and the collection and processing of data. In the second part, a number of case studies involving Italian and European museums were presented.
