12 participants joined the visit, which provided an opportunity for working group members to connect, exchange and explore, as well as engage directly with organisations and professionals working at the forefront of futures-oriented practice.
NEMO Think Tank on Museum Futures meets in Berlin for first in-person study visit
On the first day, the group was welcomed by Futurium, Berlin’s House of Futures. Members explored the institution’s exhibitions and participatory tools, gaining valuable insights into how futures literacy can be fostered through public engagement.
The programme also included a visit to the Berlin Global exhibition at the Humboldt Forum, where participants examined how exhibitions engage with futures, particularly in relation to urban development, and discussed with museum professionals on this project how futures thinking might inform the forthcoming rethink of this project.
The second day focused on knowledge exchange within the working group itself. At the meeting hosted by the Museum for Communication Berlin, members presented ongoing research, projects and initiatives that draw on futures thinking methodologies. The meeting concluded with a collaborative session to test additional foresight tools, reflect on key learnings from the visit, and plan the group’s next steps.
The Berlin study visit marked an important milestone for the Think Tank, strengthening its shared commitment to exploring how museums can anticipate change, navigate uncertainty, and contribute to shaping more sustainable and inclusive futures for the European museum network.
