Sentomus provides European benchmark for museum audience research

The European museum audience study Sentomus is now freely accessible to museums across Europe. With more than 250 participating museums over the past three years and the backing of an academic consortium of seven European universities, Sentomus provides a shared European framework and benchmark for audience research.

NEMO has previously shared results and findings from the Sentomus project. Sentomus offers museums a low threshold, yet comprehensive method to gain an in-depth understanding of their visitors and non-visitors. The study covers all relevant aspects of the museum experience, from visitor motivation and satisfaction to impact, visitor communication and overall perception. The tool is suitable for any type and size of museum. Participating museums receive a personalised questionnaire, a live interactive dashboard, multilingual surveys and communication materials. Study results remain confidential to the participating museum.

Many museums already invest in audience research to optimise their offering and to advocate for their value and impact. Sentomus allows them to do so within a European framework, offering standardised methodology and cross-institutional benchmarking. By making the study easy to implement and accessible at no cost, Sentomus also aims to remove any barrier for museums that have not yet been able to conduct thorough audience research. Museums looking for additional features can explore the extended options on the Sentomus website.

More about Sentomus

Sentomus was born from a concrete need in the museum sector. Museums in Belgium were looking for a shared study that would allow them to benchmark their results – supporting local museum advocacy and funding efforts. Through ICOM Belgium Flanders, in collaboration with the University of Antwerp and Sento, this initiative took shape. The big success of the study led quickly to similar interest and needs across the border. Today, 250+ museums across Europe use Sentomus to understand their visitors, demonstrate impact, and make better decisions.
