A new guide helps museum and cultural heritage professionals worldwide to include Ukraine in their decolonisation work.

Aimed especially at those with limited prior knowledge of Ukraine, it challenges colonial narratives, misrepresentation, negative stereotyping, and the mislabelling of Ukraine and its cultural heritage.

While acknowledging Ukraine’s complex history under various empires, the guide focuses particularly on the colonial impact of the Russian Empire and the USSR. By encouraging a process of unlearning and relearning, the guide places Ukraine within a broader context of global decolonisation efforts and solidarity.

The guide was informed by the UK Museums Association's Decolonising principles and is the result of a partnership led by the Ukrainian Institute, in collaboration with ICOM UK, ICOM Ukraine, the UK Museums Association, and with support from the British Council.
