The initiative Heritage Adapts! brings together organisations from around the world, including the European Heritage Hub, represented by project leader Europa Nostra and partner ICLEI Europe, as founding leadership partners.
Recognised by the United Nations climate agency as a Plan to Accelerate Solutions supporting the Global Goal on Adaptation, the campaign seeks to help heritage stewards respond to the growing impacts of climate change on cultural heritage. It aims to combine practical support, technical guidance and peer exchange to strengthen adaptation efforts at local level.
Supporting locally led adaptation
At the centre of the initiative is the Community of Action, an online platform designed to support heritage professionals and communities through resources, training and networking opportunities.
Key features include:
- The Action Journey – a self-paced programme guiding participants through the adaptation process, from understanding climate risks and assessing vulnerabilities to developing plans and implementing actions.
- The Regional Climate Data Hub – providing access to localised climate data in an accessible and interactive format, accompanied by training to support its use.
- The Commons – a collaborative space featuring discussion forums, virtual events, a resource library, and directories of members and service providers to encourage exchange and mutual learning.
Climate adaptation and cultural heritage
As cultural heritage faces increasing challenges from climate change, initiatives such as Heritage Adapts! seek to strengthen the sector’s capacity to respond and build resilience. By fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing across regions and disciplines, the campaign aims to support heritage organisations and communities in developing adaptation measures suited to their local contexts.
