Museum visits in Sweden increases compared to 2022 figures

A report by the Swedish Museums Association on museum visits over the summer months shows that visits went up by 8% compared to the same period last year. It also includes figures that are back at the same level as the record summer of 2019.

The report covers visitor figures of 163 museums in the months June, July and August. All 163 museums had seven million visits in total during the summer period.

About the positive numbers, Gunnar Ardelius, Secretary General of the Swedish Museums Association, said “This is a real sign of strength! The museums stand firm as visitor magnets and demonstrate their important role in society”.

The report also clearly shows that the removal of free entry to state museums resulted in fewer visits. The free entry was abolished on 1 January 2023. However, other museums that still offer free entry increased their visitor numbers by 14%.
