As trusted institutions with educational roles and ethical responsibilities, museums are well placed to approach AI and digital transformation thoughtfully while supporting their communities in understanding and engaging with digital change. To support museums in navigating the opportunities and challenges posed by rapid technological change, NEMO has identified four sub-themes that we will explore through our activities and work:
- Investigate AI’s transformative impact on museums: NEMO will look at the effect on work force and processes, museum tasks and services.
- Adress the ethical, social, and cultural dimensions of AI: NEMO will share guidelines, offer trainings, and monitor regulations for museums to implement AI safely and responsibly.
- Promote participatory digital culture and democratic access to heritage: NEMO will support museums in supporting their communities and society in general in understanding AI, issues relating to truth and trust in institutions, and democracy.
- Raise awareness of and strengthening institutional resilience to growing cyber threats: NEMO calls for skills development in house as well as advocates for increased investment in secure solutions. NEMO will also share best practices and coping strategies.
In the meeting, the Executive Board also dedicated some time to the new EU Culture Compass, which outlines the EU’s renewed strategic vision for culture, grounded in Europe’s cultural diversity, shared values, artistic freedoms, and cultural rights. The board explored the Culture Compass’ implications and potential benefits for museums in Europe, and discussed how NEMO will continue monitor implementation across EU programmes throughout 2026.
