The NEMO European Museum Conference 2026: Human after all – Museums in the wake of AI took place from 11–13 October in Vilnius, Lithuania, with the aim of rethinking the human role in museums in an age shaped by AI and increasing digital vulnerability.
At the NEMO European Museum Conference 2026 the focus shifted from technology to people: how can museums build trust, strengthen democratic resilience, and take responsibility in a rapidly changing environment? As AI transforms how museums operate and engage with audiences – and as increasing cyber threats place new pressure on institutions - the challenge is not only to adapt, but to act with purpose.
Bringing together museum professionals and tech champions from across Europe and beyond, the conference explored how museums can actively shape this transformation. From mediating contested truths and fostering critical engagement to navigating organisational change and strengthening institutional resilience, the programme connected strategic, ethical, and practical perspectives.
Through discussions, hands-on sessions and collaborative exchange, participants considered how to rethink roles, build capacity, and turn uncertainty into agency. All to ensure that technological transformation remains grounded in human values, public trust and democratic responsibility.
- Drawing on the many insights, discussions and perspectives shared during the conference, the NEMO Executive Board is preparing a statement on NEMO's position regarding museums, cybersecurity and AI. Stay tuned!
- We'll soon publish recordings of selected sessions, so you can relive the conference or experience it for the first time.
