Directors' Meeting 2023

The annual Directors’ Meeting is exclusively dedicated to NEMO’s full members, the national museum organisations. The 2023 edition was organised on Sunday 19 November at the Museum of Visual Arts Malva in connection to NEMO's European Museum Conference in Lahti, Finland.

The NEMO Directors' Meeting presents an opportunity for directors of national museum organisations to exchange views with peers and to discuss trends and key developments in the European museum sector in an informal environment. The 2023 meeting picked up the topic of the NEMO European Museum Conference so participants got to discuss how their organisations can push action for climate. They gained new knowledge about strategic sustainability management at sector level, tips on how to activate resources and form a community in which institutions support each other and that can speak for itself to other stakeholders.

This year an additional activity was added to the Directors’ Meeting format. Next to the other public workshops on 20 November, NEMO offered one workshop exclusively to the directors of national umbrella museum organisations. “Pitching for a green museum sector” was developed for and tailored to the interest and needs of national museum organisations.

The directors initiated a statement at the Directors’ Meeting that they continued to work on in the workshop. On 21 November, the NEMO statement on the future of sustainable museum collections was announced to all conference participants: "Our ethical and professional priority is to work with our communities for the future sustainability of the planet. Museums have a critical role to play in environmental sustainability and imagining our possible futures. Our commitment is that we will use our diverse collections and the stories that they hold to inspire people and facilitate change. We realise that it is no longer possible to preserve all heritage and collections in their current conditions. We are committed to re-evaluating our collections in terms of their social, historical, environmental, and educational impact."

Museums Fighting Climate Change: Ways towards a Collaborative Community
Tabea Leukhardt (Germany), Institute for Future Culture.

Moderated by Mareen Maaß.

The cultural scene is in a dilemma: we know about the threatening exhaustion of planetary boundaries, e.g. climate change. And we want to give our fair share to reduce our footprint. But implementation needs professional knowledge, skills, time and budget.

What do museums need for a fast and professional sustainability management and how can we activate resources? How can we form a community in which institutions support each other and that can speak for itself to other stakeholders?

This session will provide an insight into the requirements of strategic sustainability management at sector level and then offer space for discussion and debate.
