Despite low visitor numbers, museums have been able to limit financial losses:
- Half of the museums have lost at least a third of the normal number of visitors.
- 50% of the museums state that they expect a somewhat or much lower turnover in 2021 compared to 2019.
- 3 out of 4 museums expect the accounts for 2021 to break even or generate a small loss or profit.
- Museums cite savings, funds, local aid packages and government support packages as to why the finances are looking okay.
Museums are concerned about the future in case of new lockdowns and restrictions since they already made several cuts to diminish economic loss – additional cuts would probably result in a breaking point. One respondent to the report stated that their museum would struggle to deliver on funded projects or develop new ideas since means and staff already are stretched thin.
Danish museums are also concerned about the time it will take to regain the visitors’ confidence and attract them to visit museums even after the restrictions have been lifted.
