The minister of culture, Monika Grütters, has pledged to “secure the financial basis for this research in the long term and to motivate museums to use these research opportunities and develop new forms of cooperation with the countries of origin”. The grants will be given by the German Lost Art Foundation, which also deals with Nazi-looted art, and the initiative is a result of the art historian Bénédicte Savoy’s resignation from the advisory committee of the Humboldt Forum last year.
Grütters has guaranteed funding for six new positions at the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, which oversees Berlin’s state museums, whereof four will devote their time to researching colonial artefacts. The president of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, Hermann Parzinger, has stated that stolen artefacts will be returned to their place of provenance.
