President-elect recognises culture in the EU agenda

On 27 November 2019, President-elect Ursula von der Leyen announced the title of Commissioner-designate Mariya Gabriel's portfolio as "Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth". NEMO welcomes the recognition of culture since it is essential for well-being, social cohesion and key to a shared and prosperous future of the European Union.

At first the President-elect presented Commissioner Mariya Gabriel’s portfolio as Youth and Innovation. Several culture and heritage stakeholders reacted strongly to the new portfolio name and urged von der Leyen to bring back culture in Gabriel’s title. NEMO was one of the organisations backing the campaign and the joint effort seemed to have given the desired effect.
