Testimonies of the past. Textiles from the ethnographic collection of Countess Bethlen Anikó

The exhibition presents a selection of household and interior textiles and clothing. Interior textiles appear in a presentation that also suggests the original function of the pieces. The technical and ornamental diversity is exemplified by a single type of artefact, the towel. The exhibition includes individual pieces (sheepskin sleeveless coat, woman peasant skirt, headdress ornaments, cape, fur coat, scarf) and entire costumes from Țara Oașului, Călata and Sic area (Transylvanian Plain). Most of the artefacts in the collection come from Sic (Cluj County), which allowed us to illustrate the diversity of the traditional costumes. The costumes that appear on the mannequins were made according to the rules still alive, respected in the community. The almost imperceptible differences within the community indicate the age, marital status of the wearer or the occasion of the wear. The multitude and variety of embroidered handkerchiefs highlight the intensity of the costume making in the second half of the twentieth century.
