Guidelines now available in Ukrainian to support protection of Ukrainian cultural heritage

As part of the ICOM aid project "Ukrainian museums at risk –a three-step solution plan through knowledge, action and visibility" and in cooperation with NEMO – the Network of European Museum Organisations and the German Museums Association, three guidelines have been translated into Ukrainian.

The aid project (June 2023-June 2024) focused particularly on the digital preservation of collections. In addition to Ukrainian translations of "Standards for Museums", "Guidelines Developing Education and Public Engagement in Museums" and the "Practical Guide Digital Basic Cataloguing in 10 Principles", twelve instructional videos have been made available to provide basic specialist knowledge on how to digitise collection objects efficiently and professionally.

  • Посібник Розвиток освіти та залучення громадськості в музеях (Guidelines - Developing Education and Public Engagement in Museums) in Ukrainian, English or German
  • Цифрова базова каталогізація: 10 принципів (Practical Guide - Digital Basic Cataloguing - 10 Principles) in Ukrainian, English or German
  • Стандарти для музеїв (Standards for Museums) in Ukrainian or German

In a press release, ICOM Germany writes that “In the midst of the ongoing conflict, Ukraine’s cultural heritage is still under extreme threat: according to a UNESCO report from the 12th of June 2024, 412 cultural sites alone have been destroyed, including 31 museums. These alarming figures highlight the urgent need to step up measures to protect the country's cultural heritage and continue to mobilise international support.”

Additionally, the aid project supported Ukrainian museums in digitising their collections and registering them on the "museum-digital" platform.  In total, 34 museums published around 8,000 objects as part of the project. The Taras Shevchenko's Homeland also received a high-performance power bank to ensure power supply. The facility is a large national reserve in the Chernihiv region, which is home to the Literary Memorial Museum of the Ukrainian national poet and painter.
