Kick-off ‘Heritage, research and knowledge development’ (learning network)

What is the meaning of research in a museum or heritage organization? How does it differ (or not) from academic research? Who is considered to be ‘a researcher’ and who is not? These are the central questions that we will discuss in this new learning network of heritage workers during an entire year. The questions are highly relevant for museum and heritage practitioners against the backdrop of the new ICOM museum definition that highlights ‘research’ as a very important function. What does ‘research’ actually mean in museum practice? Is research genuinely important or is it merely an interesting discourse? Emily Pringle, former head of research at Tate Museums is our keynote speaker. She will talk about her book ‘Rethinking Research in the Art Museum’ (Routledge, 2020) and reflect on the meaning of research in a museum. In her research she has tackled the above questions. The main language is Dutch but the presentation of Emily Pringle and the conversation are in English.
