NEMO represents European museum community at EU consultation for new Culture Compass

On 20 March, NEMO Board member Sergio Servellón emphasized the vital role museums play in European society at the EU Commission in Brussels.

NEMO took part in the consultation as one of 50 invited organizations in the cultural sector. Representing our network of roughly 30.000 museums, NEMO advocates for the inclusion of a preamble in the European Culture Compass, acknowledging the freedom and independence of cultural organizations, such as museums. These organizations are crucial spaces for critical reflection and artistic expression, particularly as their freedom is increasingly challenged across Europe.

Museums should be acknowledged and supported for their contributions as providers of learning, urban regeneration, cultural tourism, and the creative economy. They are also key social agents, fostering mental health, bridging divides, and promoting reconciliation, especially in today's challenging democratic climate.

In times of increasing polarization, museums stand as trusted institutions, offering reliable, impartial information free from political agendas. By safeguarding their independence and underlining their vital role, museums will continue to be beacons of knowledge, dialogue, and democracy, shaping a more informed and resilient future for all.
