NEMO Workshop at the German Museum Association Conference: Museums under pressure – political influence in a European context

On 5 June, NEMO Secretary General Julia Pagel and Programme Manager Mareen Maaß hosted a workshop at the annual German Museum Association Conference, held in Chemnitz, Germany, under the theme 'Museums Strengthen Democracy.' As part of the programme, they presented findings from NEMO’s Barometer on political influence in museums, highlighting the increasing political pressure institutions face across Europe.

How can museums maintain independence in the face of political influence over exhibitions, governance, and funding? This pressing question was at the heart of the workshop, which addressed the challenges faced by museum professionals and decision-makers throughout Europe.

The NEMO workshop was structured into two parts. In the first workshop, drawing on NEMO’s recent Barometer on political influence in museums, Julia Pagel and Mareen Maaß provided insights into the current situation across Europe and shared examples and perspectives from outside of Germany. Workshop participants were then invited to exchange their ideas about different types of political influence and consequences of political influence on museums.

In the second part, participants actively contributed to the development of practical recommendations and strategies aimed at constructively responding to political pressures. The collaborative discussions focused on fostering a resilient museum sector.
