NEMO’s decision to leave X (formerly Twitter)

NEMO has decided to stop posting on X (formerly known as Twitter), effective immediately. While we initially planned to leave at the end of this year, recent changes to the platform's leadership, policies, and the increased spread of hateful content have made it clear that X no longer aligns with our mission or values.

You can still connect with NEMO on LinkedIn and Facebook, but we will no longer post on X or see any messages sent via the platform.

We are grateful for the great connections we've made since joining Twitter in 2010, which helped us reach and engage with our members and museum professionals from across the world through thousands of tweets. However, the platform has shifted, with diminishing engagement from our audience and rising concerns about the types of content now proliferating on X. We believe that the benefits of being on X are outweighed by the negatives and that our work can be more effectively shared and promoted on other platforms.

The final drop has been the US presidential election campaign where X owner Elon Musk has been able to use its influence to shape political discourse. NEMO also finds it concerning to use a platform that will be connected to the US government through Trump’s appointment of Musk as leader of the Department of Government Efficiency.

In a transition phase of fully leaving the platform, NEMO might still log on but will not interact with any accounts or posts.
