The statement highlights that the role of culture must be elevated on the political agenda and in the public sphere. It has been put out in response to recent developments where the newly established right-wing nationalist populist group, Patriots for Europe, seeks to see one of its members become the Chair of the Culture and Education Committee (CULT) in the European Parliament.
NEMO will discuss political pressure on museums, such as how right-wing parties and politicians threatens to use culture to convey their messages, at the NEMO European Museum Conference “Can we talk? Museums facing polarisation”. Join from 10-12 November 2024 in Sibiu, Romania, to be part of the conversation.
Culture Action Europe, Europa Nostra, and the European Cultural Foundation, the organisations behind the statement, writes that the CULT Committee must build on its past achievements and continue to advocate for cultural policies based on inclusion, solidarity, pluralism, liberalism, transnationalism, diversity, and intercultural dialogue. It is crucial that the leadership of the CULT Committee, including the Chair, Vice-Chairs, and Rapporteurs, embodies and champions these values and pro-European views to maintain a vibrant and resilient cultural sector in Europe.
