How can museums approach digital transformation in a way that stays true to their values and societal role? The toolkit ‘10 ideas for purpose-driven digital leadership in museums’ offers inspiration and guidance for cultural institutions in the digital age.

Developed by Oonagh Murphy (Goldsmiths, University of London) with the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum, the toolkit draws on the Museum’s 2023–2024 public programme, which explored the theme of ‘digital dilemmas.’ This interdisciplinary initiative brought together artists, educators, humanitarian practitioners, museum professionals and the public to debate how digital technologies are reshaping human experience.

The toolkit shares ten key insights from these discussions, linking digital innovation with humanitarian principles and museum practice. It highlights both the opportunities and the ethical challenges of digital tools, while encouraging museums to place purpose, people and communities at the centre of their digital strategies.
