The certification will be designed in close collaboration with museum professionals and technical experts to address the specific requirements of museum operations. By creating practical, measurable standards, the project seeks to further strengthen museums’ efforts in sustainability and climate protection, ensuring these activities are systematically embedded into their daily work.
The new project builds on previous initiatives by the German Museums Association such as establishing minimum ecological standards for museums and the guide ‘Klimaschutz im Museum’. NEMO has produced and published the English translation ‘Climate protection in museums’. This resource offers practical recommendations, focus articles, checklists, and examples of best practices to help museums take concrete steps toward sustainability. Additional tools, such as a materials exchange platform, have also been made available on their website to support museums in their green transformation.
By introducing a formal certification process, the project aims to take these efforts to the next level, ensuring long-term, measurable integration of sustainability into museum operations.
The ‘Sustainable Museums Certification’ project is being carried out in cooperation with the Rathgen Research Laboratory of the National Museums in Berlin – Prussian Cultural Heritage, with funding provided by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media.
