Germany’s first nationwide study on the economic footprint of museums

The Institut für Museumsforschung has published the first Germany-wide study examining the economic impact of museums. For the first time, museums across the country can present figures on their economic contribution, which provides valuable evidence for discussions with funders, policymakers, and other stakeholders.

The study finds that museums matter economically as well as culturally. They are vital location factors, boosting both tourism and the quality of life in their local communities.

In 2023, Germany’s nearly 7,000 museums contributed €9.4 billion to the country’s GDP. The direct, indirect, and induced economic value generated by museums was supported by public subsidies of around €5.6 billion, demonstrating that museums are a sound public investment.

Museums, whether large or small, rural or urban, are irreplaceable cultural institutions. They provide education beyond the classroom, promote social values, and strengthen democracy as trusted spaces for dialogue.
