New resources support museums in advancing trans-inclusive practice

The University of Leicester’s Research Centre for Museums and Galleries (RCMG) has developed six new practical resources to accompany its 2023 guidance “Trans‑Inclusive Culture.” The new resources cover topics such as briefing management, trans inclusion in the workplace, anti-trans stickering and graffiti, and ethical partnerships

Developed together with legal scholars and experts in inclusion, equality and ethics, the guidance and the new resources set out a timely and needed framework to help cultural organisations increase their confidence and capabilities around trans inclusion.

When first published, NEMO welcomed the publication and the resource received strong uptake across the sector overall. The guidance was further explored in a dedicated NEMO Webinar, where RCMG presented the ethical framework, scenarios, and practical steps included in the guidance. Furthermore, NEMO took inspiration from the guidance and developed its 2024 guideline “LGBTQIA+ inclusion in European museums”.

Today, on the Trans Day of Visibility NEMO would like to highlight the new suite of resources developed to accompany the original guidance. These additions respond directly to areas where cultural organisations have expressed a need for deeper support and practical tools. Their purpose is to build capacity across the culture sector and strengthen organisational confidence in advancing trans inclusion as part of broader commitments to inclusion for all.

Developed by RCMG in collaboration with leading UK museums, galleries and heritage organisations and a team of experts in trans inclusion, equalities, law and ethics, the resources draw on extensive research, sector consultation and co‑production. They are freely available to use alongside the main guidance.

Below follows an overview of the six new resources
