Promoting media literacy: Museum of Australian Democracy launches campaign to fight fake news

The Museum of Australian Democracy (MoAD) has launched a national campaign in partnership with independent creative agency ICON, aimed at empowering Australians to better navigate the modern media landscape. The initiative, Question of the Day, encourages individuals to engage more critically with the information they consume and share.

By encouraging open, informed conversations and deeper engagement with media, Question of the Day aims to cultivate a more resilient and discerning public. At the heart of the campaign is the thought-provoking tool Democracy Cards. Each card presents a compelling question designed to spark curiosity and promote reflection, such as ‘Is false info always a bad thing?’ or ‘What’s the wildest thing you heard on social media that turned out to be false?’ These questions are shared across MoAD’s digital and social media platforms to foster meaningful dialogue and support the development of everyday critical thinking habits.

Rather than assigning blame or aligning with any political viewpoint, the campaign takes a non-judgemental and empathetic approach. It invites Australians of all backgrounds to recognise that democracy is not automatic, rather it is something that must be learned, practised, and collectively maintained.
