The German Museums Association, a NEMO member, has published the results of a recent survey examining the state of crisis prevention and management in German museums. The findings show that while the importance of crisis resilience is widely acknowledged, concrete measures and resources remain limited.

Over 100 museum professionals, primarily from management and organisational roles, took part in the survey. The aim was to identify support needs and inform the development of practical tools for member institutions.

Key findings include:

  • Around two-thirds of respondents consider crisis prevention and management important or very important.
  • Fewer than 10% have a dedicated budget for crisis-related planning.
  • Only about one-third maintain regular dialogue with their funding body on crisis prevention.
  • There is strong demand for support in addressing:
         - Political crises, populism, and populist-motivated violence
         - Short-term budget cuts
         - Climate-related damage and extreme weather events

The results highlight the need for systematic, process-oriented crisis strategies across the museum sector. In response, the German Museums Association plans to develop a practice-oriented publication to help museums implement and strengthen their crisis preparedness.

NEMO would like to highlight its new webpage dedicated to independent museums to help guide museums dealing with issues relating to political crises and populism. As for climate related issues, check out our page on museums and sustainability.
