Toolkit supports human rights-based education with heritage collections

The practical toolkit “Applying the Human Rights‑Based Approach to Collections‑Based Education for Sustainable Development” provides guidance for museums, libraries, archives and educators on developing inclusive and impactful learning programmes.

The publication has been developed by ICCROM within the framework of the EU‑funded TOWCHED project (2025–2027), which explores how heritage collections can contribute to lifelong learning and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).

The toolkit offers methodologies and tools to help cultural organisations design and implement educational activities for children and young people in all their diversity, grounded in the Human Rights‑Based Approach (HRBA). By placing rights‑holders at the centre, it aims to strengthen access to, participation in and the benefits of learning experiences rooted in culture and heritage.

Additionally, the resource supports professionals in planning, delivering, monitoring and evaluating educational initiatives that are both inclusive and context‑relevant by bringing together collections‑based education, sustainable development and human rights. It also highlights the role of heritage institutions in fostering critical thinking, participation and social responsibility through education.

NEMO is a partner in the TOWCHED project and contributes to its aim of strengthening the role of museums in sustainable development. NEMO has also collaborated with ICCROM specifically to organise training sessions for its members on sustainable development.

Call for Expression of Interest: Co-creating sustainable futures with museum collections

For those interested in working with sustainability oriented, collection based practices with children and youth, TOWCHED has an opportunity open right now until 7 June 2026.

10 museums will be selected to become "living laboratories" where collections inspire creativity and real-world learning for children and youth. Selected museums will receive €3,000 for the subcontracted services and gain European visibility as leaders in cultural and sustainability fields.

What’s the commitment for participating museums?

  • Co-design and deliver a sustainability-focused educational project using your collection.
  • Participate in expert-led training, webinars, and peer exchange.
  • Organise one internal workshop and one public community event.
  • Support program monitoring and evaluation via surveys and interviews.
