Following both a peer audit and an external audit, we successfully met the standards required to comply with the SHIFT Culture eco-guidelines for cultural networks. Our sustainability efforts over the past year - from starting in summer 2025 until now - were reviewed by an external auditor and deemed worthy of certification. By joining this initiative, NEMO is working alongside other networks to contribute to a more sustainable cultural landscape across Europe.
Together with 16 other networks, NEMO is participating in the SHIFT programme. Each network has implemented the mandatory guidelines within its organisation, selected additional optional measures from the framework, taken part in peer audits with fellow participants, and attended a joint online development workshop.
As part of this eco-certification, NEMO has developed a sustainability policy, and defined concrete targets and actions, which are summarised in our action plan.
The guidelines implemented through the eco-certificate were developed and designed specifically for and by network organisations through the SHIFT project. Networks like NEMO tend to be small in size but large in terms of environmental influence, with most of our impact stemming from travel.
Through the eco-certification scheme, participating networks undergo external audits by Vector42 in their first and second years of participation, and every other year thereafter. In years without an external audit, networks conduct a self-review and complete a peer audit with a designated partner network to maintain their certification. Through this approach, we focus on peer leadership and accountability, while strengthening connections between networks and enabling more ambitious collective action.
