NEMO report explores diversity and inclusion in European museums

NEMO’s Working Group LEM – The Learning Museum is pleased to announce the release of ‘Diversity and inclusion in European museums - A report in collaboration with NEMO members’.

As museums face evolving challenges, from climate change to decolonisation, economic crises, and post-pandemic recovery, this report highlights the growing importance of embedding diversity and inclusion at the core of museum policies and practices.

Commissioned by NEMO Working Group LEM and authored by Jenny Siung, Head of Education at the Chester Beatty, the report delves into the richness of diversity and inclusion theories and practices across European museums.

What this report covers

Based on input from the European museum community, the report provides insights into how museums approach this crucial subject, including survey findings on diversity policies, staff roles, and institutional challenges. The report includes:

  • Case studies on ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, education, physical ability, political engagement, and religious beliefs.
  • Spotlights on inclusive language (with input from Museum Detox) and hiring a Manager of Diversity and Inclusion, featuring insights from the Rijksmuseum’s first such manager, Shivan Shazad.
  • Resources, toolkits, and further reading to support museums in their diversity and inclusion efforts.

The report emphasises that fostering an inclusive environment should be an institution-wide effort, embedded in ethos, planning, policies, and audience engagement.
