As a new year is about to start, one might reflect on working practices and explore new approaches. For inspiration, creative freelancers can turn to a new resource by Julie’s Bicycle that brings together resources and offers a structured way to integrate climate-conscious thinking into creative work.

The Creative Freelancer’s Climate Almanac, developed by Julie’s Bicycle with input from freelancers as part of the Arts Council England Environmental Programme is not a manual or a checklist, but a companion. It brings together resources from existing toolkits, templates, wellbeing practices, artist case studies, and book recommendations, presenting them through a seasonal framework designed to support sustainable change.

The almanac encourages alignment with natural cycles:

  • Spring for preparation and planting ideas
  • Summer for abundance and growth
  • Autumn for transformation and reflection
  • Winter for rest and renewal

The almanac states that that creativity, like nature, thrives in cycles of ebb and flow. This seasonal approach provides a rhythm that supports progress while keeping justice for the environment, land, and people at the center of creative practice.

Readers will find curated notes, links to films, practical templates, and examples from artists who have embedded sustainability into their work. These tools aim to ease the challenges of independent practice while maintaining strong connections with collaborators, communities, audiences, and funders.
